Tile Grout Cleaning – Why Is It Important?

Grout is a construction material which consists of a mixture of cement, water and sand and is used to fill voids and seal joints.  It is most likely that you will have seen this material being used to seal the spaces between ceramic tiles on a wall or on the floor.  Different type of tiles (such as ceramic, slate or natural stone) will all use this material, although the way it is applied may vary.

There is a general misconception that tile floors are easy to keep clean, and although you may take care to maintain the floor correctly with regular sweeping, vacuuming and washing, you may find that, over time, the floor acquires an uneven, unsatisfactory and dull appearance.  The grout is probably the reason why.

Grout is used to fill the spaces between tiles and, if you take a close look, is usually recessed lower than the surface level of the tiles.  As a result of this it is these spaces where any spillages will gather and, as tiled floors are usually found in areas such as kitchens and rest rooms, the likelihood of spillages is very high indeed.  Even if spillages are dealt with quickly the grout can still become stained as it is a relatively porous substances which liquids can filtrate easily.

The best way to keep the grout looking uniform is to apply a good sealer.  This will offer an additional layer of protection and make the grout less permeable aiding cleaning efforts.  The appropriate grout sealer can be recommended by a company which specializes in tile grout cleaning and if the floor is maintained properly, should last for a considerable period of time.

If the grout does can stained, it can lead to a dulling effect and can change the aspect of the floor even if the tiles are impeccably cleaned.  This can lead to an unsatisfactory appearance and when this occurs, general cleaning methods may cease to be effective.
